A tax deductible donation is a gift of money to a charity with deductible gift recipient (DGR) status. Give to one of these six, keep your receipt, and you can usually claim it at tax time. 100% of your donation reaches the charity.

For a donation to be deductible, three things need to line up. The charity must have DGR status. The donation must be a true gift, which means you don't get anything in return. And you need a record of it, like a receipt.
Money is the simplest gift to claim. Gifts of property, like shares or a car, have their own rules. If you get something back for your donation, such as a raffle ticket or a dinner, it usually isn't deductible as a gift. Our guide to donating a car to charity covers giving property.
You claim your donations in the tax return for the financial year you gave them. Planning to give before 30 June? Our guide to EOFY donations has the details.

How we picked these six: from Tap4Change's charity data, we took the charity with the highest recent annual donations in six different causes, all marked tax deductible and rated 3 stars with a complete profile. Hospitals, schools, universities, religious groups and charities already featured in our other guides were left out.
Some donations come with a thank you perk from a partner brand, like a voucher or a free product. It's a small thanks for showing up, never the reason to give. Offers change often, so check what's on when you donate.

Donations to a charity endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR), and covered by Item 1 of the table in section 30-15 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, are tax deductible.
Every charity's page on Tap4Change shows its tax deductibility in the top section, so you can check before you give.
Anything where you get something back usually isn't deductible as a gift, like raffle tickets, event tickets or merchandise. Donations to charities without DGR status aren't deductible either.
Gifts of property, like shares or a car, have separate rules, so check the ATO's gifts and donations guidance first.
You need a record of your gift, and a receipt is the easiest one. It should show the charity's name, the amount and the date.
You can download your receipt from your profile to claim it at tax time.

A thank you perk is a small gesture from a brand that partners with Tap4Change, such as a voucher or a free product, offered with some donations. Your donation still goes 100% to the charity. The perk comes from the brand, and offers rotate, so what's available depends on when you give.
If you can't donate right now, reach out to the Tap4Change team at support@tap4change.org. Sharing a charity's page is a great way to help too.
