Most effective charities in Australia

The most effective charities are clear about what they want to change, use approaches backed by evidence and report on their results. Use that as a checklist for the six charities below, then give to the one that ticks every box. 100% of your donation goes to the charity.

How to judge a charity's effectiveness

Effective giving means asking what difference your money makes. Look for a clear goal, programs based on evidence of what works, and honest reporting on results, including what didn't go to plan. The ACNC publishes each registered charity's annual information on its Charity Register.

Running costs alone don't tell you much. A charity that invests in trained staff, evaluation and good systems can do more with each dollar than one that just looks lean on paper. What matters most is the outcome.

Some groups do the research for you. The Life You Can Save Australia, below, recommends charities that save or improve the most lives per dollar. For smaller charities doing great work locally, see our guide to the best charity to donate to in Australia.

Want a different charity? Search all 60,000+ charities. How we picked these six: from Tap4Change's charity data, we took charities whose details describe evidence-based programs, measurable results or high-impact giving, rated 2 or 3 stars with a complete profile, and ranked them by their most recent annual donations. We haven't independently rated how effective each one is.

A thank you perk from brands that do good

Some donations come with a thank you perk from a partner brand, like a voucher or a free product. It's a small thanks for showing up, never the reason to give. Offers change often, so check what's on when you donate.

What effective giving looks like

Every charity above takes a slightly different approach. Here's what they put your money towards.

What your donation actually pays for

Your donation pays for programs that have been tested and checked, plus the evaluation that shows whether they're working. That monitoring is part of what makes a charity effective, not an extra.

Programs listed come from each charity's details in Tap4Change's charity data. For how fees, ACNC registration and tax receipts work, see the Tap4Change FAQs, the ACNC Charity Register and the ATO's gifts and donations guide.

Effective giving questions, answered

What makes a charity effective?

A clear goal, evidence that its approach works, and honest reporting on results. Effective charities keep checking their programs and change course when something isn't working.

Registration with the ACNC is a good baseline. Every charity on Tap4Change is ACNC-registered.

Are low running costs a sign of an effective charity?

Not on their own. Some costs, like trained staff, evaluation and good systems, help a charity do more with each dollar.

It's more useful to ask what a charity achieves, and how it knows, than to focus only on how much it spends on running costs.

How can I check a charity's results?

Start with its Tap4Change profile, where charities post updates about their work. The ACNC Charity Register also publishes each registered charity's annual information.

For charities working on global poverty, The Life You Can Save Australia recommends charities it considers high-impact.

Are donations to these charities tax deductible?

Yes, if the charity you choose is eligible. Tax deductibility is shown at the top of each charity's page on Tap4Change. Donations to a charity endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR), and covered by Item 1 of the table in section 30-15 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, are tax deductible.

All six charities on this page are marked as tax deductible in our charity data. You can download your receipt from your profile to claim it at tax time.

What is a thank you perk, and does it change my donation?

A thank you perk is a small gesture from a brand that partners with Tap4Change, such as a voucher or a free product, offered with some donations. Your donation still goes 100% to the charity. The perk comes from the brand, and offers rotate, so what's available depends on when you give.

If you can't donate right now, reach out to the Tap4Change team at support@tap4change.org. Sharing a charity's page is a great way to help too.
