What Islamic charities in Australia do

Many Islamic charities in Australia grew out of local mosques and community centres. Alongside prayer and religious classes, they run practical services: food for people doing it tough, support for refugees and migrants, disability services, and programs for young people.

Others raise money for people overseas after a flood, earthquake or conflict. If you're giving your zakat, our guide to zakat donations lists charities with Ramadan, Qurban and zakat programs. If housing is the need, our guide to homeless charities in Australia is a good next stop.

Giving to a local Islamic charity keeps your money close to home. It helps groups that support newcomers, young people and families in their own suburb, and you can follow their updates on Tap4Change after you give.

Want a different charity? Search all 60,000+ charities. How we picked these six: from Tap4Change's charity data, we took Islamic charities whose details describe community or humanitarian work, rated 2 or 3 stars with a complete profile, and ranked them by their most recent annual donations. Groups whose work is mainly prayer and religious services were left out.

A thank you perk from brands that do good

Some donations come with a thank you perk from a partner brand, like a voucher or a free product. It's a small thanks for showing up, never the reason to give. Offers change often, so check what's on when you donate.

Where an Islamic charity makes a difference

Islamic charities show up in lots of everyday ways. Here's what the charities above fund, so you can back the work that matters to you.

What your donation actually pays for

Your donation pays for food hampers, counselling, youth programs, and the venues and people that keep community services running. Money also lets these groups respond quickly when a local family needs help or a crisis hits overseas.

Programs listed come from each charity's details in Tap4Change's charity data. For how fees, ACNC registration and tax receipts work, see the Tap4Change FAQs, the ACNC Charity Register and the ATO's gifts and donations guide.

Islamic charity questions, answered

How do I find a trusted Islamic charity in Australia?

Start with charities registered with the ACNC, the national charity regulator. Every charity on Tap4Change is ACNC-registered, and each profile shows what the charity does and whether gifts are tax deductible.

From there, look for named programs and recent updates. You can search all 60,000+ charities on Tap4Change by name or cause to compare.

Are donations to Islamic charities tax deductible?

Yes, if the charity you choose is eligible. Tax deductibility is shown at the top of each charity's page on Tap4Change. Donations to a charity endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR), and covered by Item 1 of the table in section 30-15 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, are tax deductible.

One of the six charities on this page is marked as tax deductible in our charity data: The Islamic Society of Victoria. The others aren't, so don't count on a deduction for a gift to them. Each card shows a chip for this. You can download your receipt from your profile to claim it at tax time.

Can I give my zakat to these charities?

Our charity data doesn't show zakat programs for the charities on this page. If you'd like your gift counted as zakat, ask the charity first, or see our zakat donation guide for charities with zakat and Ramadan programs.

Sadaqah, or voluntary giving, has no set timing or amount, so you can give it whenever it suits you.

Do Islamic charities only help Muslims?

It depends on the charity. Several on this page describe services for the wider local community, such as food for people experiencing homelessness in Redfern, or a blood donation drive in Townsville.

Each Tap4Change profile shows who a charity supports, so check there if it matters to you.

What is a thank you perk, and does it change my donation?

A thank you perk is a small gesture from a brand that partners with Tap4Change, such as a voucher or a free product, offered with some donations. Your donation still goes 100% to the charity. The perk comes from the brand, and offers rotate, so what's available depends on when you give.

If you can't donate right now, reach out to the Tap4Change team at support@tap4change.org. Sharing a charity's page is a great way to help too.
