What giving back to the community looks like

Giving back is about putting something into the places and people that shaped you. For some that means a monthly donation. For others it's volunteering on a Saturday, mentoring a young person, or backing the local groups that keep a town running.

It helps to start with who you are. Are you the one mates call in a crisis? The one who loves the beach or the bush? The one who remembers what it's like to need a hand? Each charity below matches a different kind of giver, so you can back the work that feels like you.

Money is the easiest place to start, and it pairs well with time. For every way to give, see our guide to donating to charity in Australia, and our guide to giving money to charity explains why cash often helps most.

A thank you perk from brands that do good

Some donations come with a thank you perk from a partner brand, like a voucher or a free product. It's a small thanks for showing up, never the reason to give. Offers change often, so check what's on when you donate.

Which kind of giver are you?

Most of us are a bit of everything. Pick the one that sounds most like you, and start there.

What your donation actually pays for

Your donation pays for the people and gear behind community work: mentors and youth workers, crisis support, patrol equipment, and a place for families to stay near hospital. It also frees volunteers to spend their time with people instead of fundraising.

Programs listed come from each charity's details in Tap4Change's charity data. For how fees, ACNC registration and tax receipts work, see the Tap4Change FAQs, the ACNC Charity Register and the ATO's gifts and donations guide.

Giving back questions, answered

What are some easy ways to give back to the community?

Donate to a local cause, volunteer with a group near you, or share a charity you believe in with your mates. Even small, regular gifts add up.

On Tap4Change you can donate in about a minute, and build an impact profile that shows what you stand for.

Is it better to give money or time?

Both matter. Money lets a charity pay for what it needs, when it needs it. Time helps too, especially for groups that rely on volunteers, like surf life saving clubs.

If you can't volunteer regularly, a monthly donation is a simple way to keep showing up.

How can I give back with friends or family?

Pick a cause together and give as a group, or share your impact profile on Tap4Change so your mates can see what you stand for and donate with you.

It's also a nice way to mark a birthday or milestone. Our guide to donating to charity as a gift has ideas.

Are donations to community charities tax deductible?

Yes, if the charity you choose is eligible. Tax deductibility is shown at the top of each charity's page on Tap4Change. Donations to a charity endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR), and covered by Item 1 of the table in section 30-15 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, are tax deductible.

All six charities on this page are marked as tax deductible in our charity data. You can download your receipt from your profile to claim it at tax time.

What is a thank you perk, and does it change my donation?

A thank you perk is a small gesture from a brand that partners with Tap4Change, such as a voucher or a free product, offered with some donations. Your donation still goes 100% to the charity. The perk comes from the brand, and offers rotate, so what's available depends on when you give.

If you can't donate right now, reach out to the Tap4Change team at support@tap4change.org. Sharing a charity's page is a great way to help too.
