How blind and low vision charities help

Charities for people who are blind or have low vision work in two main ways. Some prevent and treat blindness, through eye screenings, surgery and training eye health workers. Others support people living with blindness or low vision, with guide dogs, mobility training, technology and help with work.

Guide dogs are the best known, but they're only part of the picture. Early intervention for young children, assistive technology and employment support all help people live the life they choose.

Money is the most useful gift. Training a guide dog or running an eye clinic takes skilled staff and steady funding. Want to know how to judge a charity's impact? See our guide to the most effective charities in Australia.

Want a different charity? Search all 60,000+ charities. How we picked these six: from Tap4Change's charity data, we took charities whose main work supports people who are blind or have low vision, or prevents blindness, rated 2 or 3 stars with a complete profile, and ranked them by their most recent annual donations. Research-only funds were left out.

A thank you perk from brands that do good

Some donations come with a thank you perk from a partner brand, like a voucher or a free product. It's a small thanks for showing up, never the reason to give. Offers change often, so check what's on when you donate.

Where a blind charity donation makes a difference

Support looks different at every stage of life. Here's what the charities above fund.

What your donation actually pays for

Your donation helps pay for guide dog training, eye surgery, mobility instructors, assistive technology and the specialists who support families. These services take years of training and ongoing care, so steady funding matters.

Programs listed come from each charity's details in Tap4Change's charity data. For how fees, ACNC registration and tax receipts work, see the Tap4Change FAQs, the ACNC Charity Register and the ATO's gifts and donations guide.

Blind charity questions, answered

How do I donate to a blind charity?

Pick one of the charities above, open its Tap4Change profile, tap donate and choose an amount. It takes about a minute, and you can give once or monthly.

A monthly gift helps with long-term costs like training a guide dog. You can change or cancel it any time from your donation history.

Can I donate to guide dogs specifically?

Yes. Guide Dogs Victoria, Guide Dogs SA & NT and Royal Guide Dogs Australia all run guide dog programs, and EverAbility runs guide dog programs in WA and Tasmania. Give through their Tap4Change profiles.

If you'd rather help prevent blindness, The Fred Hollows Foundation funds eye operations and treatment around the world.

Are donations to blind charities tax deductible?

Yes, if the charity you choose is eligible. Tax deductibility is shown at the top of each charity's page on Tap4Change. Donations to a charity endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR), and covered by Item 1 of the table in section 30-15 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, are tax deductible.

All six charities on this page are marked as tax deductible in our charity data. You can download your receipt from your profile to claim it at tax time.

What else can I do to help?

Share a charity's profile with your mates, fundraise for a cause you care about, or offer your time as a volunteer. Many vision charities rely on volunteers and community fundraisers.

Small things help too, like learning how to guide someone who is blind or has low vision when they ask.

What is a thank you perk, and does it change my donation?

A thank you perk is a small gesture from a brand that partners with Tap4Change, such as a voucher or a free product, offered with some donations. Your donation still goes 100% to the charity. The perk comes from the brand, and offers rotate, so what's available depends on when you give.

If you can't donate right now, reach out to the Tap4Change team at support@tap4change.org. Sharing a charity's page is a great way to help too.
