Donate a car to charity

Donate a car to charity, and its value goes to a cause you care about. Some charities take the vehicle itself, while others are happy to receive what it sells for. Whichever way suits you, the six charities below help people get where they need to go.

How to donate a car to charity

A car is a gift with real value. Some charities accept donated vehicles, then use them in their work or sell them to fund their programs. Each charity sets its own rules, so ask first about the car's condition, registration, paperwork and pick-up before you hand over the keys.

If the charity you'd like to support doesn't take cars, you can sell the car yourself and donate what you get for it. That way its full value still reaches the cause, and the charity can spend the money where it's needed most.

Tap4Change takes money donations, so the charities below receive gifts through their Tap4Change profiles. To give a vehicle itself, contact the charity directly. For other ways to give, see our guide to donating to charity in Australia.

  • Give the vehicleSome charities take cars directly, so check their rules first.
  • Give what it sells forSell the car and donate the money to a cause you choose.
  • Give part of its valueKeep some of the sale and donate the rest.

Want a different charity? Search all 60,000+ charities. How we picked these six: from Tap4Change's charity data, we took charities that name a transport or driving program, such as patient transport, community transport or learner driver mentoring, rated 2 or 3 stars with a complete profile, and ranked them by their most recent annual donations. Our data doesn't show which charities accept vehicles, so check with the charity before you give a car.

A thank you perk from brands that do good

Some donations come with a thank you perk from a partner brand, like a voucher or a free product. It's a small thanks for showing up, never the reason to give. Offers change often, so check what's on when you donate.

Where your car's value can go

A car gets people where they need to be. Here's how the charities above help others do the same.

What your donation actually pays for

Your donation pays for the people and running costs behind these programs, like drivers, volunteers and fuel. Money is flexible, so each charity can put it where it's needed most.

Programs listed come from each charity's details in Tap4Change's charity data. For how fees, ACNC registration and tax receipts work, see the Tap4Change FAQs, the ACNC Charity Register and the ATO's gifts and donations guide.

Car donation questions, answered

How do I donate a car to charity?

Choose the charity you'd like to support and ask whether it accepts vehicles. If it does, it will explain what it needs, such as the car's condition, registration and paperwork, and how pick-up works.

If it doesn't, you can sell the car and donate the money instead, so its value still goes to the cause.

Can I donate a car through Tap4Change?

Tap4Change takes money donations, so it can't collect a vehicle. If you sell the car, you can give some or all of the money to any charity on Tap4Change.

100% of your donation goes to the charity, and your receipt is saved in your profile.

Is donating a car to charity tax deductible?

If you sell the car and donate the money on Tap4Change, your donation is tax deductible if the charity you choose is eligible. Tax deductibility is shown at the top of each charity's page, and donations to a charity endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR), and covered by Item 1 of the table in section 30-15 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, are tax deductible. You can download your receipt from your profile to claim it at tax time.

Giving the car itself is a gift of property, and different rules apply. Ask the charity for a receipt, and check the ATO's gifts and donations guidance or ask a tax adviser.

Do I have to give the whole value of the car?

No, that's up to you. You can give the car, all of the money from its sale, or keep some and donate the rest.

Every amount helps, and you can split it between more than one charity if you like.

What is a thank you perk, and does it change my donation?

A thank you perk is a small gesture from a brand that partners with Tap4Change, such as a voucher or a free product, offered with some donations. Your donation still goes 100% to the charity. The perk comes from the brand, and offers rotate, so what's available depends on when you give.

If you can't donate right now, reach out to the Tap4Change team at support@tap4change.org. Sharing a charity's page is a great way to help too.
